3 die as nowmobiles go through ice on Vermont lake

Three snowmobiles crossing a frozen Vermont lake plunged through the ice Saturday, killing a man, his 24-year-old daughter and 3-year-old grandaughter.

The snowmobiles were carrying six people on Lake Dunmore when the accident occurred about 100 yeards from shore at about noon Saturday, Jan 9, 2010. Five people went into the water and were later pulled out by rescue crews. a 4-year-old was pushed to safety before the snowmobile he was riding went through the ice.

The accident was the latest in a series of fatal incidents involving snowmobiles in Vermont.
The 4-year-old apparently ran to shore for help. Rescuers used a ladder, a roof rake and a 200-foot length of rope in the rescue. The 6-year-old boy was conscious when pulled from the water, which is about 30 feet deep or more in that section of the lake. Just how thick the ice was at the time of the accident wasn't immediately clear, but others had left snowmobiling tracks in the area earlier.

Stand-Up Paddling... Surfing gets you on your feet

While vacationing in the beautiful state of Washington this past month...I ran across an article
about "stand-up paddling." I am going to para-phase some info taken from reporter, Chester Allen, who writes for "The Olympian." Thought all you "action" junkies out there would enjoy hearing about it!

Chris writes that you can grab yourself a 12-foot long surfboard and a long canoe-style paddle. Then you ease yourself out to some glassy lake water... ( or surf if your balance is better)! Any way, after a 10-minute introduction, you should be able to manuver just fine.

The sport has grown in the past decade and it is obviously easier to learn than regular surfing. How can it not be? You are standing on a wider, thicker, more stable board, and the long but light paddle helps with balance. "Stand-up paddlers have an advantage, as they can catch smaller, junkier waves...and they don't need to hit the peak to get the ride."

"Stand-up paddle surfing...like regular surfing ...was born in Hawaii, " writes Chris. "Boys
teaching Waikiki Beach tourists how to surf would stand on their longboards and use outrigger canoe paddles to propel the board and catch the waves. Now there are stand-up paddle-surfing contests and distance-paddling contests."

More people are learning they can handle a standup longboard (paddle board)...and after about an hour, they are sold on the sport. For you concrete junkies...order your flowboards and skateboards from Extreme Sports Junkie and feel the rush from gravity instead!

Flowboards in Russia!

There is lots of concrete in Russia..... and long, long hot summers! So what have the youth found to do to pass the time? Why, flowboards of course! They then can wakeboard with no wake, and snowboard with no snow. Flowboards offer a 45 degree angle and work just like a snowboard....but on dry land.

Of course, skateboards are popular too (surprising isn't it)? And the gentle "roar" of both the flowboard and stateboard can be heard between the buildings of urban cities in Russia.
Get your flowboard now....both 32" for hardcore boarders or the 42" for the cross-trainer..
